Buy A Poppy For A Veteran
Each year around Memorial Day, American Legion Auxiliary volunteers across the country, distribute millions of red crepe paper poppies in exchange for donations to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans in their local communities. The poppy has become a world-wide recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn by Auxiliary members to honor the men and women who served and died for their country, in all wars, including the Global War on Terror. The poppy should remind communities and this nation of the sacrifices and continuing needs of our veterans and service members. Auxiliary members must endeavor to explain the true meaning of the flower to all those who receive it.
A press release from the auxiliary unit said poppies grew wild on the battlefields in Europe and became a symbol of sacrifice in the minds of World War I doughboys. Poppies flourished among the bomb-scarred landscape. Its brilliant red bloom, which was much like the blood which had been shed there, became a sign of hope for those who would never leave, those who had sacrificed their lives and was a memorial to their bravery.
On Memorial Weekend this year and every year you will see American Legion volunteers stationed at local establishments with the well known red poppy flowers. We hope you will help their cause by donating any amount you're comfortable with in exchange for a poppy to display as you desire.
If you are a woman interested in volunteering to help America's veterans, their communities and their families then consider joining the American Legion Auxiliary. The Auxiliary meets the second Tuesday of every month at the George R. Bean Post. Please call Margaret MacNeil for more information at 781-335-3348.
